Columbus HSHT
October 2004 marked the beginning of the Columbus HS/HT program. The Columbus HS/HT program is housed at MOBILE Center for Independent Living, one of two sites in Ohio housed at Independent Living Centers. After months of organizing and planning, Jackie Kemp, Local Coordinator, celebrated the kick-off of the much awaited program with a highly attended event hosted by The Ohio State University Medical Center. Students, parents, partners, and supporters gathered to learn more about the goals of Columbus HS/HT and upcoming events.
Throughout the fall, students enrolled in Columbus HS/HT have participated in workshops with topics ranging from High Tech careers discovery to transitioning from high school to college, and events such as the College Fair for Children with Learning Disabilities and National Disability Mentoring Day.
A Calendar of Events has already been developed to engage students all the way through August 9, 2005. One promising initiative is the Leadership Institute developed by Local Coordinator Kemp. These courses are designed to advance the next generation of leaders with disabilities by promoting leadership development, education, employment, independent living, and health and wellness among diverse young leaders.
